Childbirth Without Fear, Fifth Edition

"If you are eating healthy foods when you are hungry and getting adequate exercise, your body will gain as much weight as it needs to gain!"

How many times have I reassured women with these words? I KNOW that if you have a healthy lifestyle, your body won't gain an unhealthy amount of weight during pregnancy! And yet how incredibly hollow they sound to me now that I'M the one gaining 2 pounds a week despite my best efforts to eat well and my exercising religiously.

I am very blessed to have a husband who constantly reassures me that I'm not gaining weight anywhere but my belly. He also reminds me that in an "ideal" pregnancy I would be gaining a good pound and a half a week right now, so I'm not really out of the normal range. And he reminds me that since the number one reason for home birth transports to hospital is high blood pressure in first time moms, and since the best prevention of high blood pressure is a good diet, the best thing I can do is continue to eat enough and eat healthy foods. (I didn't know he even knew that until last night!!) He's such a sweetheart. I'm SO glad he's so well-educated in the pregnancy department!! All those random stories I have told him he remembers and applies back to me when I'm not thinking clearly. He really is a sweetheart.

On a fun note, our little puppy, Jacey, turned one year old yesterday! She's the best dog. I tell you, if you are gonna get a puppy, get one as good as this one. She's been an angel as far as puppies go.

Jacey, 2 months old, the day we got her!           Last summer...

The Joy of Natural Childbirth: Fifth Edition of Natural Childbirth and the Christian Family

I think to get comments you kind of need to comment on other people's sites. I have dial-up. Just 10 hours a month. It's all I can do to READ your posts, and when everyone has all the lovely pictures, it takes FOREVER to post a comment!! I do read all your posts, xanga friends, but forgive me for my lack of comments... I still enjoy getting yours! Thanks everyone who keeps commenting here! :) It's very sweet.

In reply to everyone's questions...I'm about 5 months pregnant (only and already!) and just loving it. It is the best thing in the world to feel those little kicks and somersaults. I feel great as long as I get plenty, and I mean PLENTY of sleep! Which is usually not a problem.

Everyone asks me if I think baby is a boy or a girl. I have no inclination one way or the other whatsoever. Early on, I thought girl, and without thinking I always referred to the baby as "she." That may have had something to do with the string of baby girls born among our clients: 12 out of 14 babies in a row were girls! (I'm not sure what the current count is, but the twin girls 1 1/2 weeks ago probably didn't even out the score any!!) But lately as we've had a few more little boys here and there, my mind has shifted from definitely thinking of this baby as a girl. I call it "he" sometimes, and sometimes "she." Baby's Daddy says it's a girl, Grandma and Aunt say it's a girl. Grandpa and Uncles are positive it's a boy. (A great point of contention between aunt and uncles: "my niece" "NO! my NEPHEW!") I seem to be the only one with no idea at all. Sometimes at night when I'm laying in bed, I think only a boy could be this rowdy! I found a huge list of old wives' tales on how to tell if it's a boy or a girl. Right now, those point more to a boy...but only a few more months will truly tell! :) It's so exciting...

We have so much SNOW. Last weekend we got 16 inches in 24 hours, and none of it is thinking of going away. It's steadily snowed every day for probably a week and a half now. For the next week, the forecast every day is SNOW. It's beautiful. It snowed 4-6 inches again last night, and a couple more since we got up this morning. Calling for 3-5 inches today. The snow is way over my knees in the yard. Our deck has been shoveled off until the snowbanks all around it are level with the deck!! My poor puppy is in over her head and gets bored very quickly outside! She can only jump around in the snow for so long! It's hilarious to watch her leap as high as she can to make it like a foot forward!

10 months ago exactly we were getting this much snow. I was oblivious. I was on the verge of becoming MRS.! wow. It's only been 10 months?! Already?

Ok, I'm gonna sew like crazy today. One of these days I'm going to go to get dressed and discover that I don't have any clothes I can fit into anymore except pajamas. There is no incentive for sewing like the thought of truly having NOTHING to wear. I like pjs, but I don't want to have to go anywhere in them! So far baby and I are still fitting ok, but I'm only counting on a couple more weeks before we need a little more space...some dresses have already been moved to the back bedroom closet until next summer... :)

cheerio!

Dear Father, thank You for this new baby.

Would You protect and nurture this baby and bring this pregnancy to full term.

In labor, would You remove all fear and replace it with faith and expectation.

Please give those attending the birth wisdom to take the best care of mother and baby.

Please let this baby be born normal and whole, healthy and strong, and at home with no complications with baby or mother.

Father, thank you for hearing my prayer, for I pray in the name of Him who is called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Amen.

Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers Need to Know about the Emerging Science of Sex Differences

People in general are not exceptionally bright.

Honestly, a lot of them are getting on my nerves. At least the election is over. For crying out loud people, I don't care what the person running for president SAYS they are going to do. Since when can you believe everything (anything) a politician says? The only fact you have about what they will be like as president is their voting record. Check that out and then ignore everything they say and everything the incredibly biased media says. Obviously, someone running for president is going to say what they think people want to hear. Not necessarily what they really believe. If you want to get really in depth study their personal, not political, life. Honestly.

That said, it is interesting to note what particular organizations supported particular candidates campaigns. Does that tell us anything? If so, scary stuff, since any candidate who is offered 30 grand from a terrorist organization overseas would be at the BOTTOM of my list.

The future looks incredibly bleak. Praise the LORD that because of Him we have no need to fear or worry! Some days I catch myself wondering what on earth we are doing bringing a child into this world, one who will very likely grow up in a depression-era lifestyle under terrorist attack. But the second verse of the song "Because He Lives" keeps running through my mind:

How sweet to hold a newborn baby

And feel the pride and joy he brings

But sweeter still the calm assurance

This child can face uncertain days

Because He lives!

On a more cheerful note

I wish I could think fast enough to produce those witty comebacks some people are just so good at spouting off (at the time and not 3 days later).

Comedian Thor Ramsey, has a great one. Someone was concerned about their family's decision to homeschool their daughter. "Aren't you worried about her socialization?" Thor's reply, "YES! That's WHY we are homeschooling her!"

And last night we had a client come in for a 6 week post partum visit and the dad was sharing the story of how someone at church asked who their dr. was or something before the baby was born. He explained that they were seeing a midwife and planning a home birth. Without missing a beat, the lady said, "Oh yes. They used to do that all the time. Mothers and babies DIED, but they did it!" The dad's reply? "Why of course, that's the plan. I have life insurance on both of them."

Honestly.

(Mother and baby are happy, healthy and very much alive.)

Cloth diapering mamas: What kind of diapers and covers do you use? Why do you prefer them? I've never in my life planned on using anything but cloth diapers, but there are just SO MANY OPTIONS.

Fun fact: The average child will use about $2,000 worth of disposable diapers before being potty trained.

So really, even if we sink $700 into cloth diapers, it'll be WAAAAAY cheaper by the time we've had 8 kids. Think what we'll be able to do with the extra 15 grand! And the cool part is that we will have saved money even if we only have one child! How fun. Saving money is one of our hobbies.
